Ancient Celtic Art

Ancient ornamental artistry consisting of different forms identified with its repetitive patterns including spirals, knots and animal patters has become known to the world in 800 B.C. Though its patterns are unique and can be easily recognized, the origin and founding people have been difficult to trace so as its development. Celtic people and their civilization have cultivated their history around 400 BCE in different European countries but mainly centred in England and Ireland bearing names distinct from each other but all under in one group.

Though much was unknown of this fascinating culture, the vague identify of the Celtic people has been brought to the world through the excavated artefacts with uniquely designed decorations on axial symmetry and geometrically based sculptures. Drawings and patterns are often thought of to be functional as decorative works where belt hooks and wine vessels were the medium of the Celtic arts.

Metal, a symbol of high class artefacts, was the primary material of the Celtic artworks. Armours and scabbards used bronze and iron as a combination and are sometimes embellished with shiny materials such as glasses or coral inlays. Although these advances were to be in the Iron Age, the decorative patterns are a product of pre-Roman Iron Age and continued to exist until the fourth century. Ornaments which were used to decorate people had been thought of carrying a meaning that symbolizes social status.

The decorative designs are also being compared like that of myths and folklore that have variations. It is said that even simple lines denotes complex meanings and carry deep values. Explanations that are carried out provided reference to the world but were limited only to romantic interpretations.

Knotwork, the best known Celtic design, conveys meaningful interpretation of life as it relates to the universe encompassing the belief to the three Gods of ancient Celts, and the representations of love as two becoming one through the Lover’s knot. Also, the intertwined patterns of the knot represent the relationship of human world to the divine world with ideas on eternal life. The Zoomorphic interlace, on the other hand, provides individual’s characteristics where lions portray strength and nobility, salmon as knowledge, and birds as purity. Patters of this interlace are usually spirals for the tongue and tail, and feet for the legs.

These decorative patterns follow a stage where simplicity to complexity is evidently described in each era. From simple lines to people, Celtic arts have gone through evolution, and before and during this evolution, some complicated things happened.
